• The code works only once every few tries. The rubber dome switches under the keys flatten with age, and the carbon contacts stop making reliably. If the keypad is fully dead, you can check two things without opening anything: the breaker for the gate and whether the keypad’s backlight comes on at all. If the backlight works and the gate still will not move, stop there. Linear keypads run on low-voltage DC, so there is no shock hazard in the pad itself, but the gate opener cabinet is a different story: the capacitor inside a gate opener stores a charge that can knock a person flat even with the breaker off.
